Part of the Eastbourne War Games Society's repertoire is that it runs an annual Ancients Doubles Competition at Pevensey Bay (Anderida is Roman for Pevensey). This was first commenced by Michael Grant who at that time was the editor of the Society of Ancients and who actively war-gamed Ancients but playing mainly in the West Country owing to lack of opportunities to game in the South East. The competition was set up with a view that it would encourage Ancients War Gaming from this neck of the woods with the intention of attracting people playing in good spirit without the competitive edge one finds in some competitions. The competition started in 1997 and one of its positive sides is that although the theme is Doubles Ancient War Gaming, the social side is also very strong, one of the attractions being renewing old acquaintances from previous years. The rules used in the competition were originally DBM but for the first time the 2009 competition will be a mixed competition also using the relatively new set of rules “Fields of Glory”.

Although run by this club it is also sponsored by the Society of Ancients who present a shield each year to a team or player who they judge deserve it for either their good spirit they played or for something heroic on the battlefield.
